Didik Nini Thowok is one of the most highly recognized and frequently
requested Artists in Indonesia. Didik's multi-talent includes dancing,
choreography, drama, comedy and mime acting singing, an overall performance
art. Didik's fame propelled him throughout Indonesia for his unique style,
combining classical, folk, modern and comedic dance forms. He is one of the
few artists who continue the long tradition of "traditional cross
gender" dance form. His talents in impersonating female characters as
well as his incredible skill in various dances traditions such as the Topeng
(mask dance), Sundanese, Cirebon, Balinese, and of course Central Javanese.
His performance has on many occasions dumbfounded the audience in determining
the gender of the artist.
Didik has performed for highest dignitaries and have received awards from
Japan, Great Britain, Belgium, Germany and other areas around the world.
Didik Nini Thowok owns and operates a dance studio in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
A foundation was established under Didik Nini Thowok's name to support and
help the preservation of the cultural and performing arts in Indonesia.
Through this foundation, Didik is able to share his talent and passion in
dancing, acting and choreography to children and aspiring artists
who maybe less fortunate.
Didik will be presenting at least four dances during his performance in the
Bay Area. These dances are from three different areas of Indonesia: Central
Java, East Java, West Java and Bali.
For Didik's opening dance, he will perform Gambyong. This is a
dance originating from Surakarta in Central Java, to celebrate the Tayuban
fertility ritual. In the Tayuban dance ritual, the female dancer is a
symbol of the earth and the male dancer is a symbol of the seed. The dance
dates back to the 1920s and depicts a young woman who is celebrating her
beauty. Wearing a green costume showing off her shoulders and intricate brown
batik, Didik's supple movements and proper coquettishness reflects the
refined palace version of a dance originally taken from
Tayub folk tradition.
The second performance will be the Pancasari. Pancasari
illustrates five characters by using several masks and will be presented as a
medley. This dance and performance synthesizes traditional dances from China
and India and Western modern dance with a comic touch, illustrating how
several dance traditions from outside Indonesia influence traditional arts in
Indonesia.
The third dance will be Beskalan Putri. Beskalan Putri
is a cross-gender dance from the Malang area in East Java, in which
men dress and act as women. In the past, this dance was normally performed
for village-cleansing ceremonies, for vow statements, and as the opening for
Lerok or Ludruk performance. Currently, women also perform Beskalan
Putri, and the dance has developed into a form of entertainment performed
only for
opening events of Ludruk
art.
The best of Didik's performance will be reserved for his finale, Jepindo
Walang Kekek, a dance that draws techniques from Japanese dance and
from the Indonesian dance Tari Dwimuka, two-faced masked dance, to
portray two different characters that may co-exist in one person. Jepindo
Walang Kekek also borrows movements from
Balinese dance Legong Bapang
in the Saba style.
Topeng Walang Kekek, which illustrates three different female
dispositions: beautiful, ugly, and old. The choreography fuses three ethnic
Indonesian dance style: Javanese, Sundanese and Balinese, and incorporates
traditional Japanese dance techniques (Nihon Boyu).
This new choreography is Didik's
masterpiece.
This production is a collaboration between the Theatre of Yugen and
Didik's long-time friend, Amron Paul Yuwono in a comedic theater style
which tells the story of Didik growing up as a young boy who often got
laughed at until the present when he has gained international recognition.
Amron Paul Yuwono, will act as the young Didik, and also serve as
choreographer, producer and stage director. Part of the show will feature
live experimental ensemble music by Eddie
the Rat with Peter Martin. Included in the cast will be Bay
Area local artists Made Moja, Wan-Chao Chang, Senggo Noni, and
Christina Sunardi.
Didik Nini Thowok will also be appearing as a guest performer at Club T
Diva hosted by Tita Aida. This is a benefit show for The Asian
and Pacific Islander Wellness Center. The show will feature Rice
Girls, Mairone Daniels and Amron Paul Yuwono. This show will be on
